The Cold War expanded to oppose and contain the spread of communism in Latin America, opening a new front far closer to home for the America. America's changing relationship with Cuba during Eisenhower's presidency will also be explored.

5. US Involvement in the Vietnam War American confrontation of Communism in Korea soon led to US opposition to Communism in another Asian country: Vietnam. The reasons for, and nature of, American involvement at different stages of the Vietnam war will be analysed. The considerable social and politicial impact of the war on domestic American affairs will also be explored. Finally, the Canadian and Latin American responses to both America's involvement in the conflict and the conflict itself are assessed.

6. The Cuban Revolution The 1st January 1959 saw the end of the Cuban Revolution and the beginning of Fidel Castro's rule of the Caribbean nation. Cuba before 1959 and Fidel Castro's leadership of the revolution are assessed. The successful revolution also saw a significant shift in American foreign policy attitudes towards the fledgling Communist nation and Latin America generally.

From Kennedy to Carter: US foreign policy in Latin America 1961-1981 Presidential leadership on foreign policy during these two decades saw the American involvement in Latin America expand and evolve.
